The posts ranged from hysterically blaming the government for the blasts to equally ridiculous postings that the country has reached a morality level of lunacy. To the people who seem to think the sky has fallen…well…it hasn’t. Yes these blasts are terribly but there is a context to these attacks. Either these people do not remember the late eighties and nineties or just weren’t in existence then. For fuck’s sakes we had an insurgency in the south, a terrorist group in the north and an invading army from India in the country and we are still in one piece. Sri Lanka has endured worse, much worse. And to those who say I say this while being comfortably out of the country…fuck you. Almost all my loved ones are still in Sri Lanka as is all my heart and most of my head. It is a matter of time until I come back for good and I would like to have a country to come back to.
As for blaming Mahinda, it seems a bit strange to me. Are those same people wiling to point fingers at Ranil about the bomb blast that happened in 2004? Or have they forgotten that already? I think Mahinda is an idiot; I am under no delusion about his and his cohorts’ inherent corruption. But Ranil is an equal idiot. They are all fucking idiots and have always been. To the people who blame Mahinda, please do explain your reasoning. The way I see it we don’t really have a choice but to fight this war. Granted it’s easy for me to say that when I don’t really have to fight it but I can have an opinion.
No peace is possible with Prabhakaran. He is not simply the leader of the LTTE he is the poor delusional fools’ God, the Sun God. With him alive, you can negotiate until you are blue in the face, but all that will happen is you will die of asphyxiation.
Feel free to blame Mahinda for the rising cost of living, blame him for the blunders of our foreign service, for the waste and corruption, the lack of a coherent political package for the minorities. Blame him for all that, because he deserves that…and more. To blame him for the blasts however is ridiculous. There is only one man to blame for that, Prabhaharan. His obstinacy, his delusions of divinity, his inability to comprehend a life without bloodshed, an existence without bloodshed is what caused those 20 odd innocent people to lose their lives in Colombo. It is what makes negotiations impossible and every day of his existence causes more death and destruction.

Hear hear:)

It has been said time and time again that the LTTE will remain a threat until Sri Lankans put aside their blind political differences and work towards the prosperity of the country first, their pockets second. Unfortunately, our people seem to prefer to fight amongst themselves without solving the bigger problem, and the LTTE is loving it.
In my eyes, the solution is part-military, part-social and part-economic…in more or less that order. I don’t care whether Ranil or Mahinda implements it…as long as someone does.

To say that all out politicians are fools anyway and that the bomb blasts are the fault of Prabhakaran is wrong. “Fault” is something that lies in the hands of anyone that had the opportunity and failt to prevent the blasts.
Remember, in the short and medium term, we have to choose between the politicians that are already available, to run our country. And also accept that bomb blasts are not random events that occur at random intervals. Regardless of who authorises them, they are a result of the policies carried out by the people in power.
In the context of your list of Manhinda’s faults: Well there is a politian in our midst who could run Sri Lanka properly. From experience we know that he is not corrupt. From experience we know that he does not misuse power to fill his personal coffers. From experience we know that he will develop the economy, that he will not “lack a coherent political package for the minorities”. And you know what? I think, if he was in power, that bomb blast would not have happened. 99.9% certain. His name certainly doesn’t begin with M. If a name comes to mind when I say these sentences, then you know who I’m talking about.

Darwin – shampoo all ready
Pseudorandom – Your last sentence could not have summarized my opinion better. Eliminate VP, put forward a political package for the minorities and negotiate with the carrot of economic development.
SC – yep
LD – politics has always been and always be a dirty, dirty business.
Plink- Finally some debate! First off I don’t think I am wrong in saying that VP is at fault for the bomb blasts. If you blaming Mahinda for the blasts as a result of his policies then logically the suicide bombing in 2004 is the fault of Ranil’s policies at the time, a connection which I can’t see. I’m talking medium term not short term.
Who is the politician that you speak off? Do you mean the same one who has pretty much zero control over his own party? Who would not be able to prevent his hangers on and golayas from filling their purses with our money? Who stood by with JR in ’83 while the Tamils burnt in the streets of Colombo? Who refused to support Chandrika’s devolution proposals in the nineties? Who plays the same petty games all politicians in Sri Lanka play for personal gain and power?
If that politician was in power we may have not had these particulars blasts in their present context, but with VP still the head of the LTTE there would still have been bombs. And there always will be as long as he is there.
Please note that I am NOT an SLFP/UPFA supporter. Nor am I a UNP supporter. In the last two decades I have seen both parties and our leaders fuck our country up with their selfishness and suffer no delusions as to what each leader will bring to the table.

Well, I only meant that we have choose from the ones that available. I didn’t say any politician was faultless.
Strange that you managed to zero in on a name when I uttered a list of very positive qualities. What does that say?
And speaking of the last two decades: yes, agreed, but I don’t think anyone has done this much damage to the country in such a short period of time before.

Plink – don’t pat yourself on the back too much because I assumed you were talking about Ranil. It only follows logic that you are talking about him as I don’t know anyone else who challenges Mahinda for power. I don’t think anybody in their right minds would describe Wimal Weerawanse in those terms. I’m a liberal alcoholic so I personally prefer Ranil’s economic management to Mahinda and the JVP/JHU’s virtuous façade. So really that I assumed it was Ranil doesn’t mean much, it doesn’t change the facts. That he has been as much of an arse in the past as Mahinda is in the present.
As for saying Mahinda has done the most damage in the shortest time, that is an immensely subjective thing to say. Junius that sly fox for example came to Executive power in 1978 and in 1979 instead of dealing with Tamil militancy and its root causes decided to impose the PTA. S.W.R.D. became prime minister in 1956 and promptly passed the Sinhala Only act…seems a bit silly to say Mahinda is the most damaging.
Besides none of this takes away from my central point that in the analysis and response to an event such as what happened hysterics and irrationality do more damage than good.
P.S. what does it say that you assumed I was talking about the same person you were with all the negative qualities I mentioned?

childoftwentyfive, I just wanted to convey my appreciation for your comments at groundviews. Thanks for keeping it real and giving the ‘other perspective’ that has been ignored by a lot of the NGOs, and Tamil bigots.

Man, child of 25 thank God there are people like you around. a lot of people in the Sri Lankan blogosphere seem to be LTTE apologists. Thanks for speaking the truth from your heart! Keep up the great work, looking forward to more of your writings.
