As usual, true to form. Clear my head, tie up the loose ends and forget and once it’s done and dusted, two weeks later…the phone shivers. It’s a bit of a random message but an invitation to a conversation. Frankly one does not text someone 10,000 miles away without it being an invitation for a conversation. Sigh…I had two options.
1) Ignore it
2) Start a conversation
If it was email/facebook I would have no qualms with a conversation, it’s easy and simple. Text conversations are so much more labour intensive, especially early in the morning. The cost/benefit analysis just does not add up. I decide to take the middle path (the good Buddhist that I am). I craft one of those texts that start with a “hehe” and end with a smiley face but doesn’t really say anything in between. You know those ones that acknowledge you received the message but with no lead into a conversation. Press send and head to work.
It’s just not worth it. And it seems to have worked, no response.
I still check my phone on and off though…a half hope…pointless hopes…

Dude. Text messaging is from the devil.
I still don’t fully understand the rules of conduct myself and this gets me into all sorts of trouble. Don’t you think people in Sri Lanka are WAY more reliant on it that the run of the mill North American? Hmm. Reliant or cheap. The million dollar question right there.

onetime i used to spend a fortune on text messages, hehe. but now don’t. really rarely get entangled with ‘text conversations’ nowadays. last month’s bill was, like US$2 i think

i have LONG sms conversations with people because it’s cheap
though it is a bloody nuisance to type long messages.. sometimes i end up calling them mid-convo because i can’t be bothered typing..but here in SL, texts are probably the most economical way to keep in touch (after smoke signals that is)

Rastiadu - When in SL I do send around 20-30 texts a day and receive the same while in US I barely send that amount a month. Of course that may have to do with the lack of friends I have here:)
Nirmal - yeah ever since T-Mobile started charging its gotten bloody expensive…not that money is the main issue…its just the inherent problems with using such a unreliable form of communication with someone where the situation is already so complicated.
Pissu - sms in SL is excellent for kupadi kathawa…especially with multiple people…very effective flirting medium when in the same country…different countries however is an issue!
