“Drunk” and “Primary School” are generally not words you want to see in the same sentence. Unfortunately it looks like some places have, well, pretty lax (to say the least) drinking rules. And I thought I had a drinking problem! Those kids leave me in the dust…and in retrospect I don’t think I have a drinking problem because I never drink by myself or to escape anything (except life in general)
I’m all for underage drinking but the situation described in the article is just stupid. I love the fact that I grew up in Sri Lanka where we could hit clubs, drink and get used to it while we were pretty young (why do I know I’m going to get some abuse for that statement). Look at most people in the US where the drinking age is 21 and the attitude towards booze is retarded, at least in my opinion, too much binge drinking to insensibility. Then again I am from a country which currently holds the world record for alcoholism so my opinion is probably a bit skewed on this subject matter.
Needless to say, my favourite part of the article was the heading of the picture “Alcohol impaired the performance of the school,” no really?

Haha yeah I saw that article and thought “what the…” until I actually read it. Then I just thought “d’oh”.
I don’t drink and I for one feel sad when I go out in Colombo and see kids waaaay junior to me in school stumbling out of clubs without an ounce of balance left in them. Actually I feel sad when I see anyone in that state, regardless of their age. Yes I am old fashioned and no I don’t understand the thrill in getting legless…but that’s just me.
I don’t get the binge drinking trend either. What happened to ‘everything in moderation’?

You know, I’ve heard other people mention that Sri Lanka holds the world record for drunks, but is there any actual hard evidence the prove that? I did some poor ass google searching and all I could find was this –> http://www.finfacts.com/Private/bestprice/alcoholdrinkconsumptionpriceseurope.htm

I agree, the legal limit being 21 over there actually makes the kids take more risks and overdo the whole ‘forbidden fruit’ thing. Prime example would be the “hell yeah!!!” types seen during Spring Break!
I have to admit though, seeing someone aged 15 being pissed drunk is a lot less disturbing than seeing someone aged 15 who is pregnant and smoking a cigarette…I nearly told this girl off but it was none of my business and if A) she didn’t know about birth control and B)she didn’t know about risks associated with smoking during pregancy then chances are her kid would be born retarded anyway, based purely on the genetics!

hey i have a glass of wine alone somedays when i get home after work.. and i don’t have an alcohol problem
UK has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe (apparently), i don’t disbelieve that cos i do see a number of 11-13 yr old wanting contraception which always shocks me (i guess i’m old fashioned)and makes me wonder about the ones who don’t ask for contraception !!
going back to alcohol..it always amused me how many boys and girls would present with injuries relating to inebriation on a fri/sat night in A&E requiring stitches more often than not and phone calls to irate parents early hrs of the morning to come and pick them up… bloody hilarious. used to stitch the little buggers up without any anaesthetic and they didnt seem to feel a thing

In most clubs and bars I saw in Delhi they say that alcohol will not be served to ppl below 25. So you basically start drinking when you hit a midlife crisis.

i too think that the legal age for drinking shud be close to 21..but u tend to get tempted and so maybe over 16 shud be ok.but primary school kids consuming alchohol isn’t good as there may be unforseen health issues that wus pop later.. same goes for all others who drink heavily..and i for one, don’t mind takin liquor alone…not in huge doses tho. but i truly feel sorry for those kids..and for all those who’s still don’t know the limit of liquor they can take in…

savi3: blood, gore, stitches, fights and excessive alcohol consumption? Why, that sounds like a mild night out in these parts
I also had some hilarious flashbacks to my undergraduate days, so err.. never mind.
My respect goes out to the farmers that frequent the “old man’s” local in the nearby village though. I’ve seen them put away double digit numbers of pints in around 3 hours of drinking. Far from dying of alcohol poisoning, they just stagger home mildly happy. That sort of alcohol tolerance has to be genetic.

savi3: Lots farther north from your stamping ground, I gather (York). Besides, I didn’t say all of that happened to me, did I?
The city center is a bit of a warzone on weekend nights. I’m an alcoholic lightweight. One sniff of the barmaid’s apron, as they say…
And about that guinea pig comment… Now I know why so many people told me to get the hell out of medicine
